Meet Sue McGrew! Professional sand sculptor and martial arts enthusiast! Sue is a Puget Sound native who has spent over fifteen years carving, tamping, and shoveling her way to international acclaim by creating an empire entirely out of sweat, sand, ice, and snow. Sue is no stranger to the spotlight, co-starring in the reality TV show “Sand Masters” and breaking a Guinness world record for tallest sand castle with Sand Guys International. While Sue loves her nomadic lifestyle, her home away from home is Muaythai Iyarin, a family owned gym in Ballard where she happily calluses her knuckles and knees training Krav Maga and Thai-style boxing.
Q: What is your favorite thing about Velo Sports Rehab?
“I always find new ways to injure myself. Sometimes it’s as simple as falling asleep on an airplane with my neck at an angle or it can be as intense as getting kicked in the ribs while sparing. I love knowing that Adam’s got my back and will not only help put me back together, but also clearly explain the injury to me and teach exercises I can do to help. Recently I’ve found that his “Iron Face” technique has really improved my boxing game. Adam is super easy to talk to, a wealth of knowledge, and we always have a lively time working through my injuries.”
Q: What activities do your treatments at Velo Sports Rehab help you to enjoy?
“Sand sculpting is a physically challenging art form involving everything from carrying heavy wooden forms to having the stamina to endure full days carving in sun or rain. Competitions often involve hand shoveling tons of sand and speed sculpting your way down. After a few weeks abroad, I’ll return home physically beat up and sunburnt, and often overdo it with round two of boxing, demanding even more from my body. Adam straightens out all the kinks so I can keep training at the gym and still be ready to rock and roll for my next sculpting project.”
Q: What else would you like to share with us about your experience with Velo Sports Rehab?
“Back in 2017 I was in a tough spot — my arms were so numb I could hardly sleep. I feel so lucky to have found Velo after years of trying different massage and chiropractic clinics. Fast forward to today I can feel my arms! Velo helps me work hard and play harder. Thank you!”
